Code of conduct

Student rules, studio policies, health and safety, dress code, and attendance policy

Following are the expectations and responsibilities of dancers and parents at TurnOut Ballet Studio.

Our aim is to instill a love for dance in our students while creating a fun, friendly, and safe space for the students. The following guidelines are put in place to achieve this.

Code of ethics

Respect

Helpfulness

Dedication

Discipline

Teamwork

Ballet is a form of discipline.

Students

  • Students must always uphold the highest level of discipline in their conduct and speech when in the studio.

  • Remember that you are a role model to younger students and should be cautious of your use of language and behaviour.

  • Students must practise respect towards themselves, each other, parents, and teachers.

  • Students are expected to keep quiet when someone else is talking.

  • Students are to not distract other learners.

  • Students must be prepared and eager to learn.

  • Students should focus on self-improvement and not critique fellow learners.

  • Students should refrain from critiquing the instructor.

  • Students shall show respect and care for studio equipment and facilities. This includes cleaning up after yourself.

Parents

  • Parents are expected to be respectful to other parents, teachers, and students.

  • Under no circumstances will unacceptable behaviour towards a teacher, student or other parent be tolerated. Unacceptable behaviour includes harassing, bullying, swearing, spitting, fighting and derogatory comments – verbally, physically or electronically (through social media or contact through electronic devises) this can result in legal charges and immediate dismissal from the studio as well as being banned from the premises/event /performances.

  • Parents must take the responsibility to read email updates or WhatsApp notifications and keep themselves up to date with current activities and important information.

  • No parent or guardian is allowed in the studio when class is in session.

  • Parents should oppose their child challenging or misconducting towards teachers and other dancers.

  • Parents should support their child(ren) and not set unrealistic expectations for them. It will place unnecessary stress on the students and can be very damaging if the students feel they are not living up to parents’ expectations.

  • Parents should not compare their child(ren) to other dancers, each individual has different capabilities and should only aim to achieve their own personal best.

  • If you are displeased with the teacher do not take it to social media, organize a meeting with the dance instructor.

  • Parents should not try peeking through the windows when class or examinations are in progress.

  • No smoking is permitted on the grounds or near the vicinity where children are present.

  • Lastly, parents should never force the child to continue dancing if they have lost their passion for it. If you see your child is losing interest, please speak to the teacher right away to attempt to improve the situation or to remove the student from classes.

Syllabus work

  • No syllabus work may be taught outside of the studio to a non-enrolled student.

  • DASA’s syllabus work is subjected to copyright and therefore no videos of syllabus work may be uploaded to social media or any platform where it might be pirated.

  • Payments made from the 15th of the month will incur a 10% late fee.

Attendance

Regular attendance is vital to a successful dancer.

  • Immediately notify your teacher if you are feeling unwell while at class.

  • If an injury occurs the teacher will phone the parent /guardian as soon as possible.

  • If a student has sustained an injury and/or is unable to dance, he/she is still expected to attend class and learn through observing, (the music and repetition of seeing the movements and corrections aid the dancer in memory rather than muscle memory which is equally valuable.)

  • In case the dancer will be absent from class, the teacher must be notified in advance.

  • Excessive absences may result in a student being disqualified from exams and/or performances.

  • When choosing to stop ballet completely, please notify the teacher immediately.

  • If you are temporarily struggling to make class fee payments, but intend to catch up and allow your dancer to continue with classes, please do not take them out of class! Rather speak to the teacher to arrange a payment plan and avoid letting the student fall behind. Parents will still be responsible for the class fee whether the student attends or not, unless they are entirely removed from the program.

Punctuality

Punctuality is not about simply being on time; it is about respecting your own commitments.

  • Grades 3 and up (including majors) are expected to arrive at least 10 minutes before class begins to warmup and have a calm mindset. If a student is not properly warmed up before class, they are increasing the chances of getting injured.

  • If a student will be late, please inform the teacher.

Behaviour Outside the Studio

  • Whilst waiting to enter the studio, be respectful and quiet.

  • Do not wear ballet shoes outdoors.

Dancewear

  • Dancers must come to class wearing the appropriate dancewear. This is to ensure that the teacher can appropriately correct technique and reduce the risk of injuries.

  • Any colour leotards are welcome for the class. For exams each level will be assigned a certain colour leotard, price list and additional information will be made available nearer to the time.

  • Dancewear must be weather appropriate – warmly dressed in winter and cool in summer.

  • Hair must be up, away from the face, and tightly secured in a ballet bun or other style.

  • No jewelry is to be worn that may impede movement (necklaces, loose bracelets, long earrings, etc.).

Rules about food and drinks

  • A dancer should eat healthy and well-balanced meals before class, but not in the classroom.

  • No chewing gum is allowed.

  • Bring a full water bottle to each lesson.

Social media

  • DASA’s syllabus work is subjected to copyright and therefore no videos of syllabus work may be uploaded to social media or any platform where it might be pirated.

  • The Facebook and Instagram pages run by @turnout.ballet studio do occasionally post photos of our talented dancers; there is no personal information placed on these sites.

  • We ask that all parents, guardians, and students ensure that they use social media and the Internet in a safe and positive way when mentioning or representing TurnOut Ballet Studio.

Cell phones

  • No phones are allowed in class. Switch it off and leave it with your belongings. It is part of DASA’s regulations that no syllabus work be recorded as that could be seen as plagiarism. DVD’s are available to be ordered from the teacher.

Outings and Competitions

  • When representing the studio all the current rules apply apart from dresswear which must be appropriate for the occasion. You are obligated to stay with the person responsible for you.

Teachers and examiners

  • Teachers, guest teachers, and examiners must be unbiased and not show favouritism.

  • Teachers will continuously assess student's performance in classes, exams, and performances to determine the correct class placement for each student. Factors such as age, maturity, and overall character will be involved in these assessments.
